faq - frequently asked questions about our website design

The following is an actual copy of a recent list of questions from a potential client that was emailed to me.  It answers some common questions based on a quoted price for a 30 page website.  The identity of the client is edited for confidential reasons.

Dear Jeff,

Chris, my husband, and I have some questions:

 1. Is there an advantage for getting a new web host, and if so, what cost
is involved. ? Think we now have *******.com. What are your fees for
interim updates or new pictures to the website later?

Most hosting companies are basically the same.  I prefer my company because
they are a large publicly traded company with great 24/7 support.  They are
also inexpensive with hosting starting at $9.96/month.  However, you may use
whomever you like.  Click this link for my maintenance fees:

 2. How many web pages are included in your design quote? Would we be able
to do our own updates to specials and info on a monthly basis? If not,
 what cost is involved?

30 pages, yes, you may do updates if the site is produced and maintained on
your own computer, which I have done as well for other clients, otherwise my fees are listed
on that fees page linked above.

 3. Do we send you pictures or do you take pictures yourself?

Obviously provided photos are the most efficient process, usually taken from
the manufacturer's website or others selling the product online now,
provided the images are not copyrighted/produced in-house.

 4. What would the fee for a later shopping cart be, and would we update
 that  ourselves?

Shopping carts range in price from $300 up to $3000 +.  Adding a product to
a shopping cart could be done in-house, however creating it on the website
would take some design-work, very minimal since website layout would already
be done.  You are looking at about 10 minutes of design work.

 5. On one of  the  pages I'd like links into in-depth descriptions and
pictures of our four main services. Would that be part of what you have quoted?

If those links are to other pages within the site, that would be considered
one of the pages, if they are linking to pages on other websites, then it
would not apply, except for the link page itself.

 6. I'd like a page or link offering a free report in response to getting
their contact info. Is that additional cost?

Yes, any page created would be considered part of the thirty proposed.  Those pages
would be sitting on the site, but only accessed by you emailing the prospect
the page link.  They would not be accessible from the site itself.

 7. I'd like some kind of newsletter informational page that can be updated
by us monthly and fed into the web site. Is that additional?

The initial newsletter page would be part of the 30 pages, however changing
the text would be part of monthly maintenance.  If you have your graphic artist create a
splashy newsletter or if you do it in Word, it would not take hardly any time to update that
newsletter page, less than 10 minutes.  Check my fees page and you will see
how much my monthly maintenance fees are, then you can determine, when I
quote you times for projects how you will be charged, sometimes, you can
just choose a new web page at $38 rather than use maintenance time.

We need a policies and fees page or link and a directions/map link under
the contact us page. Is that extra.?  If we keep the web name as
**********.net, but change the business name to ****** ****** is there a problem from a marketing/recognition aspect or do we need a new domain name to ********?What is typical cost
for domain name? How long would it be ours?.

Yes, a policies and fees page would be part of the initial 30 pages quoted
in the initial project.  See fees for additional pages if you go over 30.
Website names do not have to reflect the legal name of the entity, although
it is suggested to get as close as possible or come up with a short acronym
or other short play off a name for your web presence.  The shorter the name
the better.  You may also for a nominal fee forward all traffic from one
domain to another, usually less than $10 a year.  Domain names usually cost
approx. $35 per year, however many hosting companies will offer you free
domain names if you use them for hosting, as does my company.

Thanks for your help, we are close to making the decision!
